I’m back on the GMO kick thanks to a new study that was recently published. According to the anti-GMO side, it is proof positive that GMOs are bad: GMO feed turns pig stomachs to mush!
If you have stomach problems or gastrointestinal problems, a new study led by Dr. Judy Carman may help explain why: pigs fed a diet of genetically engineered soy and corn showed a 267% increase in severe stomach inflammation compared to those fed non-GMO diets.
Pretty damning stuff…until you read the actual data. Here’s the key part, first column is the non-GMO results, and the third column is the GMO results:
So, yes, 23 GMO fed pigs had severe inflammation while only 9 non-GMO fed had severe inflammation. But look at the figures for the other inflammations. When you tally them all up, 69 inflammations for the non-GMO guys, and 64 inflammations for the GMO fed guys.
I’m no scientist, but if the control group has almost as much inflammation, then perhaps the issue isn’t GMO, but the effect of an unhealthy diet? I’m sure if I ate only corn and soy, GMO or otherwise, my intestines wouldn’t look too healthy either.
If nothing else, these results, for me at least, highlight the fact that factory farmed meat is unhealthy. Free-range pigs who can root around for grubs and “express their pigness” (I love Joe Salatin for coining that expression) are a lot healthier and thus healthier to consume…that goes for all animals, really.
So I guess a better headline should have been “Pig feed turns pig stomachs to mush!”
Just read this bit by Professor Friendship (great name) who points out that red coloration in the stomach is no actual indication of inflammation.
